Why we should get rid of equality and anti discrimination legislation

Remember back to a time not in the too distant past when the coalition government was formed. A time when the newly formed government said they were committed to having a bonfire of the quango and tearing down the red tape that strangles not just businesses but individuals also.

Fast forward to today and we can all see that none of this has happened. Yes a few quangos have been got rid of here and there, red tape torn down but replaced elsewhere. It’s a joke really.

One thing, which I know will prove a controversial subject would be to repeal all of the equality and anti discrimination legislation. When you have a long hard think about what this legislation has actually achieved, you realise it changes nothing. My view on matters such as these is that if they are unenforceable it’s a complete waste of time. Let’s be real, you cannot force this kind of thing on society.

How can the state control what is going on in an interviewers head when he is making a choice on picking a candidate for a job. Regardless of if his decision was made from a fair, sexist, anti disabled or racist stand point, the state cannot control what this person is thinking. This is the realist view of it.

Now a look at it through the eyes of Libertarian ideals. Those Libertarians out there, like myself, think it out of the question that the state should dictate to businessman (or businesswomen if you want to be PC) what they can and cannot do. If a businessman happens to not like someone for whatever reason , I think it right that it should be the choice of the owner to employ who he wants. After all, the business is his property and as Libertarians are Capitalists, we believe in private property rights and what you do with your own property (your business) should be down to you (the owner) and not of the state. By allowing the state to legislate on these matters holds the theory that the state owns us and that we are not individual free human begins.

A prime example of this is the case of Mr and Mrs Bull the devout Christian hotel owners who refused their service to a homosexual couple. I myself disagree with it, but believe it be the right of these people to do as they wish with their property, their business.

Any decent Libertarian would always say that they do not support discrimination but if we are to live as a free people in a free society we should have the right to discriminate on whatever the issue would be.

Current “equality” legislation is actually discriminatory. Take for example female quotas on the work place. That is discrimination against a male who may have come across better in the interview and had more experience that the female. We know this as positive discrimination and it is becoming pervasive throughout society.

Oh and before people start calling “racist, homophobic, Xenophobic” etc, I must let you know I believe in a meritocracy and freedom of thought, speech and expression. I believe these core rights to be

inalienable.

I leave you with a quote from Nigel Farage which sums up my thoughts; “Freedom of speech and belief is not subject to approval by a transitory authority. It is absolute or it is nothing”
