Election Over. Revert To Type.
Ken Clarke really is a chump of magnificent proportions. He has, finally explained exactly what the Tory promise on the Lisbon Treaty amounts to. The answer, naturally, is not much at all!
During the European election campaign Cameron and his team did everything they could to come over all eurosceptic. They repeated their pledge to hold a referendum on the Lisbon treaty at every opportunity, yet when pressed on what this meant if the treaty has already been ratified by the time Cameron takes up residence in Number 10, the response was mealy mouthed. They said they “would not let matters rest there”.
Having singularly failed to explain that phrase during the campaign, Ken Clarke has finally done so on national TV…
Mr Clarke – the shadow business secretary and one of his party’s most prominent supporters of Europe – said: “If the Irish referendum endorses the treaty and ratification comes into effect, then our settled policy is quite clear that the treaty will not be reopened.”
“But it has also been said by David Cameron – and he means it – that it will not rest there, and he will want to start discussions on divisions of competence between national states and the centre of the EU.”
So it seems that ‘not letting matters rest’ actually means ‘have a jolly good conversation and ask if the others would awfully mind handing some powers back to member states’!
NO re-opening of the Lisbon treaty
NO retrospective referendum (Hmm)
Of course, us real eurosceptics could see this coming a mile off. In fact UKIP went to great pains to point out the Conservative policy vaguery. What I want to know now is what Cameron’s plans are in the event he is unsuccessful in securing a restructuring in the EU he so desires?
Needless to say, commenters over at Conservative Home have gone into overdrive.
Below, you can see Clarke on the Politics Show and Sky News exposing the truth of Tory policy and dumping Cameron in the sh*t. In the Sky Interview right at the end Clarke says the Tory front bench is not as Eurosceptic as it once was! Quelle Surprise!

Thats cleared that up then!
No referendum followed by 'discussions' that Cameron has no hope of winning!
So, a European election campaign and seats won under false pretences……..?

Amusing to note that it hasn't even raised a mention in the Telegraph this morning. I hope that anti-EU conservative voters are kicking themselves pretty hard today.

These recent pronouncements have at least clarified my mind regarding my voting intentions. It will be a very long time before I can bring myself to vote Conservative; in fact not until they have a transparent policy to get us out of the EU, and consequently remedy the immigration issue. I don't think anyone will be able to address the latter without achieving the former.

A chump? A Tory gives his honest view and that makes him a chump? I would have thought you would respect the fact that although you may not agree with his views, he is at least honest about them, unlike the smoke and mirror Tory leadership.

Jason, you make a valid point, however his comment clearly adds definition to Tory policy which was not mentioned during the campaign, and which Cameron has not announced.
Clarke's views are perfectly legitimate and well known. I referred to Clarke as a chump because of his 'foot in mouth' comment which no doubt caused a few expletives at Tory HQ!!

For what it's worth I am very much in favour of an EU referendum and a No vote and total withdrawl. However the immigration issue is not really caused by the EU. The real underlying issue is caused by our totally screwed up welfare and benefits sytem. If we sorted that out we would have far less of a problem and would actually gain some positive benefits from a much smaller immigration pool.
Both Clarke and Liam Fox have both now made the same comment. We have the answer. A referendum if not already ratified and not if it is.

Not only does Cameron stand no chance whatsoever of securing the return of any competences from Brussels to member states ( doubtless he is fully aware of the fact that the Acquis Communautaire would make this impossible)but, once Lisbon is ratified he will be powerless to prevent the transfer of further powers to Brussels.
As I have long suspected, Cameron and Hague are now beginning to show their true colours as fully fledged europhiles. But, this may possibly be the beginning of their undoing, for not only will this infuriate the (majority) eurosceptic part of the Conservative party, but the lies and deliberate deception with which they campaigned during the EU elections will not be lost upon the uncomitted "swing voters" without whom no party can hope to win a working majority at the General Election.
Perhaps one of UKIP's election slogans should be "Vote Cameron, Get Brussels!"

In the 2005 General Election the three main parties all promised a referendum on the new EU treaty.
All three parties have now reneged on that election promise promise.
This shows that you cannot trust the three main parties, even to keep election manifesto promises.
You just cannot believe a single word they say.

It's good that Nigel Farage takes a political shot at Conservative, this will help ensure the UKIP stays in the media.

Which is why in the council election, with a choice of Liebour or CONservative, I wrote UKIP on the ballot paper and put a tick by it. Spoilt ballot paper but I will never again vote for any party or person who wishes the UK to remain subservant to the EU government, i.e. in the EU = ruled by the EU.
